senator john kerry to serve on the team and the fbi agent was barred from taking part in the case for allegedly sending shirtless pictures of himself to a woman involved in the case. meanwhile, the ghost writer of broadwell's book, vernon loeb, says he was clueless about the affair between petraeus and broadwell. here with the latest on the scandal that keeps getting bigger and more bizarre, cnn's pentagon correspondent barbara starr and intelligence correspondent, suzanne kelly. welcome back to you both. >> thank you. >> when we talked on friday night, it was all just breaking and it seemed a relatively straightforward scandal but none of us thought it would stay that way, and sure enough, tonight, a really bizarre twist. it's not john kerry possibly becoming defense secretary, nothing bizarre about that at all. what is bizarre is this revelation in the "wall street journal" and it's reported there, we haven't independently corroborated this, that apparently the fbi agent originally detailed to investigate this scandal ended up sending shirtless pictures of himself to this other

was consulted on what to say. now that turned out to the be wrong. and i have great respect for john mccain and lindsey graham, because i consider them friend, and they are right this needs to be investigated 100%, and very, very serious, but it is different from saying that there was an intentional misrepresentation, and i don't understand attacking ms. rice, the ambassador who was telling the truth that she believed at that time which turned out to the be wrong. >> and on the anderson cooper's show, it was very similar circumstances with wmds and that had more catastrophic circumstances you could say. so it is a rocky path to whom you are going to choose to defend and not defend is serious. >>> the judgment to put ambassador rice on the television shows without having all of the facts was a judgment that the white house made and president obama has it right if there was a criticism to be made, it was in the judgment in retrospect, but certainly, i don't understand impugn iing th sincerity for doing what ambassador rice is there to do and speaking what she was told to say. >> and someo
, where she is now being grilled by john mccain and others. i'm talking to him in a few minutes. so it's very significant i think what general petraeus believed at the time. it does beg a belief, really, why would ambassador rice go on national television, having had a briefing we believe from the cia, which turned out to be flawed if the director of the cia right away knew this was an al qaeda affiliated group? >> yeah, you know, it's washington, isn't it. i mean, you know, the theory, what petraeus is expected to talk about is he had his talking points. he got them declassified, approved to go out there in public. when ambassador rice started talking from her talking points, this included other information that wasn't exactly what the cia thought might be really going on. i think some members of capitol hill have brought it down to this point, was the obama administration incredibly incompetent or did they mislead congress, or did they just simply not know. probably it's a little bit of all three. >> let's turn to suzanne kelly. the fascinating thing again today was the senators allo
in afghanistan, general john allen, a marine corps four star general, current nominee to be the new nato supreme allied commander, so a very big fish indeed in the military. he is apparently at the center of a scandal involving 30,000 documents, all pages or e-mails or whatever that he exchanged with this second woman, the other other woman, jill kelley. what do we know about the content of this? because it's not as simple as simply 30,000 e-mails, right? >> well, that's the real question. what's really involved here. the spin machine is in full cycle on this one. the pentagon says it's about 30,000 pages of documents. they may not all be e-mails, but a good portion of them are e-mails between allen and jill kelley. pentagon official telling reporters today in his words, they may have been inappropriately flirtatious. what does that mean? well, the word on the street is that he might have written some of these e-mails and maybe in some cases called her sweetheart. nothing more meant by it, we're told, than he's a virginia gentleman but, and it's a big but, on the other hand, defense secretary le
